John Deckert met Ivan Karp in the OK Harris Gallery on West Broadway in Soho. Ivan took a careful look at the abstract imagery that filled his portfolio. His prophetic advice at the time was, “Do nature painting.” It took a while to realize the importance of that simple statement.

This has taken the form of plein-air paintings completed on site in one or two sessions. Recently the paintings have grown in size and complexity requiring a greater investment of time and a greater requirement of skill in execution.
